Nonlinear optical birefringence in Li2SO4-MgO-P2O5 amorphous system -influence of Cu ions

Li2SO4-MgO-P2O5 glasses doped with varied contents of CuO (from 0- 1.0 mol%) were prepared. The optical birefringence induced by a High Q-2 femtosecond pulsed laser is explored as function copper oxide concentration in these glasses. magnitude the light-induced exhibited gradual decrease increase content. observed behavior discussed terms polymerization glass network, degree which rises Cu+ ions occupying Td sites matrix. However, samples containing low content are dominated Cu2+ that act modifiers and induce structural imperfections breaking P-O-S bonds. Accordingly, mixed lower more favorable for inducing higher magnitudes birefringence. This conclusion corroborated results electrical conductivity, positron annihilation ultrasonic measurements.
